About UNESCO and DESD
UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, is in charge of the promotion and coordination of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD). Proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2002, the UN Decade spans from 2005 to 2014 and aims at integrating the principles, values, and practices of sustainable development into all aspects of education and learning.
Addressing all three pillars of sustainable development - society, environment and economy - along with culture, the Decade focuses on promoting and improving quality education, reorienting educational programmes, building public understanding and awareness and providing practical training.
The DESD implementation plan strongly relies on stakeholder commitment and cooperation at local, national, regional and international levels.
