Stavros Dimas graduated in Law and Economics from the University of Athens, and also has a Masters in law from New York University.
Professional career
Mr Dimas began his career at Wall Street Law Firm Sullivan and Cromwell in 1969. He moved on to work for the World Bank in 1970, working as a lawyer for the legal department of International and Finance Corporation. He was Deputy Governor of the Hellenic Industrial Development Bank from 1975-1977. From 1977, Mr Davros entered politics becoming a member of the Greek Parliament for New Democracy. He held several ministerial posts including Trade, Agriculture and Industry, Energy and Technology. Before entering the Commission in March 2004, Mr Dimas was the head of the New Democracy delegation to the Council of Europe. Stavros Dimas has been the European Commissioner for Environment since November 2004.
