Youth Eco-Parliament |
| |
The Youth Eco-Parliament®
is an environmental education project with the
aim of encouraging sustainable development in
Europe.
The project takes place within the framework of
the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development
and uses pedagogical methods in line with the
UN's environmental education aims.
The educational programme of the Youth Eco-Parliament
is based on 3 pillars:
|
- A collaborative writing programme that
takes place during an entire school year
with participants across Europe and beyond,
accompanied by their teachers
- National and international meetings of
students delegates to discuss their local
environmental projects and present the collaborative
efforts of their work to adults
- An exchange of ideas on the Internet in
the form of discussion forums or chat
|
In
2006, collaboratively written "Open letters
for the environment"
This year, the Youth Eco-Parliament is inviting
3600 young people aged between 15 and 17 to
appeal to influential opinion-makers and decision-makers
on environmental questions through the medium
of 'Open letters' for the environment.

To think and to act constructively
in the perspective of sustainable development concerns everyone
in our society. It is for this reason that these letters, collaboratively
written and based on assessments by the students of their local
environment, will be addressed to influential representatives
from 7 range of fields in civil society:
|
| |
- Producers (manufacturers, farmers, craftsmen),
- Researchers and scientists
- Educators
- Journalists
- Representatives from non-governmental organisations
- Representatives from the public sector (politicians
and civil servants)
- Representatives from international organisations (EU,
UN, UNESCO, UNICEF…).

These
young people from 14 countries (*)
are divided virtually in 7 international Writing Commissions,
each responsible for writing one Open letter to one of the
7 groups of recipients. They work in English and use the European
Youth Eco Parliament Internet site www.eyep.info especially
designed and run by professional teachers of environmental
education in the Network Ecole & Nature.
Once their first ideas are sorted out, they meet with important
people and ask them to validate their statements. Then they
have to decide which final content shall be included in their
Open letter.
In October 2006, 120 delegates of these young people will
meet at the 3rd International Pro-Europe Congress in Paris
and present their work to selected international representatives
of the recipients of the 7 Letters. The program will include
presentations, sharing of experience and ideas with the congressmen,
round tables with dedicated representatives, press interviews…
